2011 Summer Session
(SUDJ004)
Last year, I was very pleased and indeed honoured to see Soul Unsigned featured in the "Best UK Label" category of the annual poll in the excellent Soul Survivors magazine, now in its fifth year of publication.
Obtaining third place behind two long-established labels like Dome and Expansion was a nice endorsement of what we've achieved at Soul Unsigned in a relatively short space of time.
Often, when I talk to people about my record label, they assume that the aforementioned Dome and Expansion were my inspiration. While it's true that I hold both labels in very high regard, you have to go back further in time to find (what in my mind at least) is the true precursor to Soul Unsigned.
It's the compilations that featured on Morgan Khan's legendary Streetsounds label that I'm most trying to emulate. Of course, the soul scene in 2011 is completely different from when those classic comps were selling by the bucket load in the early-to-mid 80's. And I wouldn't be so presumptuous to claim or assume that Soul Unsigned, or any other record label, could operate in the same league today.
However, I have to confess to you, seeing Morgan's kind and supportive words on the sleeve notes of this CD does bring a lump to my throat and a smile to my face!
I know that Soul Unsigned can never match the achievements of Streetsounds. But given the scene we operate in, and the limited resources available to us and the artists we represent, I don’t think we’re doing too badly...!
